The firm asks to keep what you shared for longer, you choose item by item what it may keep, and anything you leave out is deleted on the date it was already promised.

A firm asks you to renew when the period you agreed to is about to end. It asks whether it may keep what you shared for longer. Nothing new is collected and you upload nothing. The request arrives as a private link. The firm may send it itself, or we may email it on the firm's behalf with a subject that starts "Consent renewal request for" and names the purpose and the firm.

The page is headed Renewal request from and the firm's name. The strip shows On file, which is the number of items, then Kept until, which is the new date, and Answer by, which is the last day the link works. Under What you shared earlier, every item is listed with a tick and all of them start ticked. A ticked item reads Kept until the new date. An unticked item reads Deletes on its original date.

The new date is counted from the date your items were due to be deleted. It is not counted from the day you answer, so answering early or late gives the same date.

  1. 1 Leave ticked what the firm may keep and untick the rest.
  2. 2 Choose the button below the list. It starts with Agree to keep when at least one item is ticked. When none is ticked, it reads Don't extend, delete on followed by the original date.
  3. 3 In the panel, tick the box and choose Agree. The panel is headed Your consent. When you keep nothing, it is headed Your answer and the button is Confirm.

What happens next depends on your answer:

Your answerWhat happens
You keep all or someTicked items are kept until the new date. Unticked items are deleted on their original date. You get a receipt with a new rights link.
You keep noneIt is recorded as a decline and the firm is told. Everything is deleted on its original date. You get a receipt with no rights link.
You do not answerThe link stops working on the date under Answer by and the firm sees that you did not answer. The original dates stand. Not answering is never treated as agreeing.

One thing can move a date. The firm can keep documents past their date by recording a reason, which is either that a law requires it, with the provision named, or that you are still its client. Your rights link then shows the new date.

If the firm settles the matter before you answer, by keeping or deleting the documents itself, the page says that no answer is needed from you. After you answer, the link closes. Opening it again shows Answered.

You can change your mind later. Your rights link withdraws your consent, and what was kept under the renewal is deleted unless a law named in your notice requires it. If we emailed you on the firm's behalf, we may remind you before the link ends. Each email carries a link at the bottom to stop our emails for that firm. Stopping them does not close the renewal link.

For example

Priya Nair agrees on 1 July 2027 that Amaltas Deshmukh & Co may keep the documents it holds for her for 365 days, so they are due to be deleted on 30 June 2028. On 15 June 2028 the firm asks her to renew for a further 365 days. Her page shows Kept until 30 June 2029. She agrees on 20 June 2028 and keeps every item. The date is still 30 June 2029, because it counts 365 days from 30 June 2028 and not from 20 June 2028.
