Open your rights link, choose Ask for a copy, Ask for a correction or Ask for deletion, confirm, and the firm has 90 days to answer on the same page.

You need the rights link from your receipt, and your consent must still be in force. Once you withdraw the consent, the page shows it as withdrawn and offers no requests. If you have no link, see what to do when you did not save it.

  1. 1 Open the rights link. The page shows your consent.
  2. 2 Under Your rights, find the card you need. The cards are A copy of what you sent, A correction and Deletion.
  3. 3 Choose the card's button. The buttons read Ask for a copy, Ask for a correction and Ask for deletion.
  4. 4 For a correction, write what is wrong and what it should be in the box. It takes up to 2,000 characters. The page will not send a correction with an empty box.
  5. 5 Confirm with the button that repeats your choice, for example Yes, ask for a copy.

The card then shows Asked on with the date and says the firm has until a date to answer. The law gives the firm 90 days to answer (DPDP Rules, Rule 14). Our guide explains what your rights are. You can have one open request of each kind at a time. While one is open, the page shows its status and does not accept another.

We do not send an email or a message when the firm answers. Come back to the same link to see the outcome.

What the firm does depends on what you asked for:

  • A copy. The firm sends you the copy itself, by its own means. We do not send it and we cannot check that it was sent. The card shows Done with the date when the firm marks it done.
  • A correction. The firm reads what you wrote, corrects its records and marks the request done.
  • Deletion. This is not a withdrawal, and your consent stays in force. The firm may delete what you sent, or may keep some records because a law named in your notice requires it. In that case the card shows Declined with the law and the date those records are deleted. If the firm holds your documents itself, it deletes them from its own records and marks the request done.
  • A refusal. The firm may decline a request. The card then shows Declined with the date and the firm's reason. You can ask again.

If the date passes without an answer, the request stays open on your page. The page names the firm's grievance contact and says that you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India if your grievance is not resolved.

For example

Anita Deshpande asks Amaltas Deshmukh & Co for a copy through her rights link on 1 September 2027. Her card shows Asked on 1 September 2027 and says the firm has until 30 November 2027, which is 90 days later. On 8 September 2027 the firm sends her the copy and marks it done. Her card then shows Done on 8 September 2027. Nothing was emailed to her.
